This trend has led to a significant surge in sales revenue for pre-rolls, making it one of the fastest-growing segments in the cannabis industry.
According to a recent study conducted by Custom Cones USA and Headset, pre-rolls experienced an 11.89% increase in sales revenue between June 2023 and June 2024, amounting to over $4.1 billion in sales and selling more than 394 million units during that time frame. The rising popularity of pre-rolls has been attributed to consumers seeking instant gratification and convenience. Adam Coates, the chief revenue officer of Decibel Cannabis Co., the number one selling pre-roll brand in Canada, emphasized the growing demand for convenience formats, which has contributed to the rise of pre-rolls as well as other categories like all-in-one vapes.
Infused pre-rolls, particularly distillate-infused ones, have emerged as a top-selling category, surpassing hybrid and single-strain pre-rolls in sales reaching more than $1.75 billion in 2023 and Q1 of 2024, while maintaining an average of 43.4% share of the segment. This shift in consumer preference towards infused pre-rolls has been driven by factors such as increased potency, added terpenes, and a preference for premium products.
Furthermore, the study revealed that multipack pre-rolls have gained popularity with sales at 27.7%, representing nearly half of the pre-roll market. The rise in multipack sales can be attributed to their economic and convenient packaging, which benefits both manufacturers and consumers. Also worth mentioning is the rise of the quarter-gram joint, made popular by brands like 1Spliff and Dogwalker.
Overall, the cannabis industry has witnessed a significant evolution in consumer preferences, with pre-rolls, especially infused and multipack options, becoming a staple on retail shelves while continuing to drive substantial growth in the cannabis market.
