A recent study has explored the impact of alcohol and marijuana on sexual experiences, suggesting that while alcohol may initiate sexual activity, marijuana may enhance sexual sensitivity and satisfaction. The study, published in Revista Internacional de Androlgía, is the first of its kind in Spain to compare the effects of alcohol and cannabis on sexual experiences in the same participants.

The study involved an online survey of 483 individuals who had previously used both substances. Interestingly, the findings reveal that while alcohol increased certain elements of sexual attraction, individuals who used marijuana reported greater sexual satisfaction and sensitivity compared to those who consumed alcohol. The study noted that although alcohol may facilitate the initiation of sexual encounters, individuals reported feeling more sexually satisfied when using cannabis. These findings, although significant, should be interpreted cautiously due to the non-random nature of the survey.

When participants were asked how alcohol and cannabis affected their sexual experiences, approximately 19 percent reported that marijuana improved their experiences, while only 8.4 percent stated that alcohol had a similar effect. Notably, a higher percentage of respondents reported that the consumption of cannabis produced no changes in their sexual experiences compared to alcohol. The study also highlighted that individuals generally preferred not to be under the influence of substances during sex, despite showing a preference for consuming cannabis over alcohol.

Another interesting finding was that marijuana was associated with orgasm promotion, excitement, and relaxation during sexual encounters, which led to an accentuation of sensitivity to physical contact and increased satisfaction. On the other hand, the study found no significant differences in sexual intensity between alcohol and marijuana. However, it noted longer sexual encounters with alcohol consumption, particularly among individuals who consumed alcohol and cannabis more frequently.

In addition, the study also noted conflicting findings regarding the impact of cannabis on sexual function in men and women. Furthermore, while some studies suggested a positive effect of cannabis on sexual function, caution was advised regarding the dosage of THC, as excessive amounts could potentially backfire.

The findings in this study contribute to the existing body of literature on the influence of cannabis on sexual function and experiences. It acknowledges the complexity of the relationship between cannabis and sex and highlights the need for further research, especially regarding the effects of intoxicating substances on sexual functioning.
