This year Nike is planning to release a retro version of the classic Air Zoom Spiridon in its original “Sport Red” colorway. A insider within the sneaker industry with intimate knowledge of the release stated that the release is set to happen around the time Nike is set to release their Holiday 2024 collection however the release could quite possibly be pushed back, (representatives from Nike neither confirmed nor denied theses claims from the insider).
The Nike Air Zoom Spiridon, released in 1997, was designed by Nike veteran designer Christian Tresser, who also designed the Air Max 97 and as of recent, works as a designer on Yeezy’s design team. The “Spiridon” name used in the Nike Air Spiridon, was originally used as a name for a pair of running sneakers released in the mid-1980s. Later, Nike released the Spiridon Gold that capitalized on Portuguese long-distance runner Carlos Lopes’ 1984 Olympic marathon gold-medal performance in Spiridons.
Since 1997, the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon has returned to shelves multiple times. In 2005, the Nike Air Spiridon were retroed and due to lack of popularity/sales many pairs ended up on sale shelves. From 2016 to 2018, Nike released a number of colorways of the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon most notably the classic “Sport Red” colorway. Although Nike rerelesed other classic sneakers such as the Cage 2, this coming 2024 release of the Nike Spiridon will mark the first time the Air Zoom Spiridon has received a proper retro since the wave from the 2010s.
The Nike AIr Zoom Spiridon “Sport Red” will be available in select retailers and online at Nike for the Holiday 2024 season.
